For once, nothing regarding medicine

February 22nd, 2006 | Category: Musings, New Orleans

So childrens, here’s the digs. It’s 1:47 AM, I’m still dressed and feeling detatched. I have a brand new beast of a computer that I have been enjoying thoroughly lately. Playing around with linux, adoring the game F.E.A.R., and loving the fact that I actually have a separate computer to be my server. Then why is it that I still feel like I’m floating? I suppose it could be the fact that I’m actually going to finish undergrad this year. Could also be that I’m currently living in a completely different world due to the post-Katrina wonderfulness, yes, it’s a word. Nothing is open late, let alone 24 hours. I think wal-mart still closes at 8 PM. The Tulane library closes at midnight and I’ll be damned if I can get any good reading done unless I’m doing a 6PM-6AM shift with Tracy (doctor friend) at the hospital. Planning the move to Fort Worth is also somewhat surreal now. I need to figure out when we’re going so we can pick out a place and whatnot, but it somewhat feels like there’s fog around it in my mind. I do apologize if this is more rambly than my usual wittiness, but I’m a bit spent. One good thing is that my brother is coming in from Virginia for Mardi Gras this Thursday. OOH! I just remembered! I’m also getting these jeans (http://rufskin.com/product.php?product_id=4). I normally hate denim, but this company makes some amazing jeans. So all is not lost. Maybe this week will revive me with a good bout of drinking and game playing. It’s been a while since I’ve actually had fun. I bid you uhdoo with an excerpt from this wonderful poem: “Hi my name is Bingo, I like to climb on things. Can I have a banana? Eek eek!”

L’opital

I really got a taste of what my career choice will be like. For the past year and a half I’ve been working with a doctor in his clinic. Seen the occasional gross/neat thing, learned a lot, etc. I’ve gone on rounds with him at Tulane before, no big deal, just cool. However, that was all from an attending’s standpoint. Since returning from Katrina’s House Of Fun, I’ve been going with him moonlighting at Lakeside hospital emergent care. Here’s where the fun starts: we do a shift from 6 PM to 6 AM. Now, me being a night owl, this is no problem. The only problem is, its on Friday and Saturday, and I still gots class and lab all day Friday. So, this weekend, I got up on Friday at about 8 AM and did the school bit, then went to the ER at 6 PM. Well, not only is he moonlighting in the ER, he’s also on call for Pediatrics (he does med/peds). So I stayed and rounded with him until about 9 AM ish. Come home, napped for maybe an hour (give or take) and then got to go to a Shriner/clown lunch at Andrea’s. Which was pretty good. Then, came home and made dessert for the ER, because we were bringing food. So I made cream cheese ice cream, cream biscuits, and a brandy berry sauce from scratch and headed back to the ER. After the 2nd night, I was a tired puppy. But all is not bad, I got to see what happens when you don’t clean yourself and get an abscess on your lower back. As an instructional note to all: bathe. It takes care of a lot of problems and avoids you having needles stuck in your back, scalpels cutting your back, and generously squeezed until a liberal amount of pus and blood gets oozed out of a now larger hole in your skin. Now I’m off to eat more ice cream…….mmmm, it’s white too.
